I was not a fan of the "pending approval" the last time it was used. It certainly left some great comments unseen unless people decided to delve deeper into them. And it lost some good commenters, I think, who just gave up. Hopefully this will come to a reasonable compromise for all.

Yeah. I read similar things happening to other Gawker sites. Could be a glitch. Just comment as you normally do and either it gets fixed or your account gets approved anyway by the editors.

Jalopnik's not on my "followed by" list, but I'm not grayed out. So the whole following thing isn't necessarily how the approving system works.

It's up to the approved commenters to promote quality posts, but around the time the whole scheme shut down last time, a lot of great Jalopnik commenters had left because of other site changes (cough, two column posts), and some approved commenters were only promoting joke comments, so... A mixed bag.

True. There is no total fix. On the plus side, as I see it, 4Chan "people" (and I use that term loosely) get their kicks and move on to other things.
